When life’s a beach, here’s how to protect your sun-kissed skin

On our recent vacay to Bali, we got thinking: how many of us bask in the sun for hours on end without a care in the world, completely oblivious to what those pesky sunrays are actually doing to our skin and health?

Yeah, we all love the idea of tanned, sun-kissed skin but sunburn is anything but sexy. And while falling asleep on a Parasol by the water feels kinda’ awesome, waking up beetroot red doesn’t so much.

This little checklist will make sure you’re caring for your skin before, during and after your sun sessions.

Not so fun fact: Melanoma skin cancer is the 4th most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in Australia.* Which means we should all know better than to head out for a day’s sunbathing without wearing any protection. On your body, slather on a shot glass’s worth of a broad-spectrum sunscreen that’s at least SPF 30. For your face, you’ll need another teaspoon and apply before you go and soak up the rays as SPF needs a good 20 minutes to sink in before your skin is completely protected. Reapply every 2 hours (and after taking a dip in the water) and you’re good to go.

Although sunblock plays an important role in protecting our skin, no matter how much SPF you’re wearing, limiting your exposure to direct sunlight is key. Invest in a sun hat – there are so many cute designs out there, you’ll never tire of them.

Don’t think the sun’s out? Think again. Even when it’s cloudy and overcast, rest assured the UV rays are still piercing through the clouds. A tinted moisturiser with SPF on your face and a lip balm with sunscreen should keep your skin youthful and glowing.

If you’ve been roasting out in the sun for a wee bit longer than necessary, chances are your skin might appear dry and flaky. Slather a good dose of shea butter all over your body. As this sinks in, throw on a Trefiel Repairing Mask for at least half an hour. Free radicals and UV rays may have taken their toll. But that doesn’t mean you can’t fight back. The soothing combo of chamomile, aloe and witch hazel extracts will have you rejoicing like the sun goddess that you are.

Yep. You’ve turned into a lobster. Sh^*! What to do now? Aloe vera spray should help soothe sensitive skin layers and avoid scorching hot water. Just don’t say we didn’t tell you so!

Enjoy and be safe, sun lovers.
