4 reasons you don’t want to use a blackhead removal mask

Blackhead peel masks are bad for your skin

Chances are you’ve seen images of people peeling off their faces (“blackhead removal”) all over the internet. Painful, fast, effective (apparently), the real question about this product is…

Do blackhead peel masks work?

No, they don’t. But if that’s not enough to stop you adding them to cart, let’s dive into some of the evidence.

1. They’re a glorified exfoliator

Blackhead peel masks are essentially the same as sticking tape on your lips and ripping it off. You get the satisfaction of seeing all that dry skin come off, but at the end of the day, you still have the same problem – dry lips.

I personally think you could achieve the same results by buying construction tape from your local hardware store (it would also be a quarter of the price).

What you're essentially using on your skin... next stop, Bunnings.

2. They only remove part of the problem

Blackheads are caused by a buildup of oil, bacteria and dead skin and it’s often trapped underneath your skin where you can’t see it. So that tiny black dot you ripped out is the tip of the iceberg, so to speak and yes, it will come back.

3. They will leave your skin feeling irritated and sensitive

You could be lucky and have no issue with your skin, but every time you use these masks you increase your chances of dry, irritated and reactive skin. That’s a risk I’d rather not take, personally.

4. Skin care should not be painful

You don’t need to peel your face off to see results with your skin. Please stop.

You won't be this happy when you're peeling off your skin, instead of your blackhead
This is not how happy you'll be when using this mask.

This is what you should do instead

I want to give you some safe alternatives to try and before you resort to a blackhead peel mask. Firstly, I highly recommend that you buy a hydrating face mask that has a plant-based formula. In particular, you’ll see the best results if you leave it on for as long as possible (I usually sleep with mine on overnight).

You can also try using:

  1. chemical exfoliator
  2. An oil massage
  3. A healthy diet to erase blackheads

PS. If you’d like to learn more about any of my alternate solutions, please leave a comment below to let me know and I’ll create some more blog posts about the one that interests you most.
